Guiding Eyes depends on volunteer puppy raisers to provide the love, support and direction the puppies need to prepare them for formal training as future guide dogs. Raisers from Maine to North Carolina take puppies into their homes for thirteen to nineteen months and teach them manners and social skills. No prior experience is necessary as Guiding Eyes provides training and support for raisers. In addition to daily work and play with their dogs, raisers attend local classes and puppy evaluations. After the dogs have matured, they are sent to Guiding Eyes for formal training as guide dogs.
